MW I: Things That Go Bump
October 25, 2008 8pm (tickets range from $10-35)
Humperdinck: Witch’s Ride
Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
Just in time for Halloween, the GSP sets the tone with an evening of ghostly musical tales. Ghouls and goblins roam the night, a hungry witch chases children, and two musical portraits of devilish obsession make this program a must!
MW II: Elemental Music
November 22, 2008 8pm (tickets range from $10-35)
Handel: Water Music
Barber: Capricorn Concerto
Copland: Quiet City
Haydn: Symphony No. 43, Mercury
Music is an elemental force; nature in sound. Composers have explored this theme for centuries. Mercury, the quick silver messenger, Capricorn, the earth sign and life giving water. Each element with its own characteristics; each piece with its own sound. A multi-media display enhances the program.
MW III: Family Relations
March 21, 2009 8pm (tickets range from $10-35)
J.C. Bach: Symphony in B flat
Neruda: Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra
Sampson: Serenade for Flugelhorn and Orchestra
Mozart: Symphony No. 29 in A Major
Young Mozart was greatly influenced by JC Bach, one of JS’s many children. Their friendship changed the way Mozart wrote music. David Sampson’s Serenade for Flugel Horn was written as a sonic depiction of his family. Virtuoso trumpeter Don Batchelder performs this and the Neruda Trumpet Concerto, displaying his skills on both instruments this evening.
MW IV: The Eroica
April 18, 2009 8pm (tickets range from $10-35)
Rossini: The Barber of Seville
Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-Flat, Eroica
Beethoven’s Eroica symphony changed classical music forever. Originally dedicated to Napoleon, Beethoven crafted music that
captured the essence and personality of greatness. The opera world knows no bigger personalities than Figaro, the Barber of Seville, and Sigfried, the hero of Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle.
MW V: Sonic Vistas
May 9, 2009 8pm (tickets range from $10-35)
Copland: El Salon Mexico
Ippolito: Timpani Concerto
Borodin: In the Steppes of Central Asia
Respighi: Pines of Rome
Join Maestro LaGruth and the GSP as they take you on a journey to far away lands. The tour makes stops in exotic locales as well as right in our own back yard! Visit a raucous Mexican cantina, the desolate isolation of the Caucuses, and the grandeur of Rome. New Jersey natives Patrick Ippolito (GSP Composer in Residence) and Barry Centanni (Soloist) team up to give as a peak at an exotic solo instrument in a concerto grown right here in the Garden State.
