FIRST TIMER'S GUIDE
Who is welcome?
Everyone is welcome to attend GSP concerts. The doors of the Strand Theater are open to anyone who is eager to learn more about symphonic music. All concerts at the Strand are accessible to the disabled, as are the events at Toms River Schools. For Chorus concerts, call the office to ask about accessibility. Should you have any special needs or concerns, please call the office and we will be happy to accommodate you.
Are children allowed to attend GSP concerts?
While we also have a Music for Young People concert series at Toms River Schools, children may attend our regular concerts as well. We recommend that you prepare your children to attend by teaching them concert etiquette, and that you start with a shorter concert. Attending the symphony can be a great educational experience particularly if your children are already involved in music.
I don't know much about classical music, what should I do?
If you are unfamiliar with classical music, there is no need to worry! There are many things that you can do. You can always just come to a concert with an open mind. We also have pre-concert lectures which are free with the purchase of a ticket. Maestro LaGruth gives these pre-concert talks to explain the music you will be hearing at concert time. These lectures start at 7:15 at the Strand. Lastly, the Ocean County Library has a large collection of music which allows you to explore for free.
When should I arrive?
For Masterworks concert, Maestro LaGruth leads a fun and informative conversation about that evening's music starting at 7:15pm. For other concerts, or if you are not interested in the conversation, be sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the concert to ensure that there is enough time for you to take your seat. Latecomers will be seated after the end of the first piece or the first movement.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable.
How do I know when to clap?
It has become common practice to wait until the end of the entire piece to applaud. If you are unsure when to applaud, do not worry; open your program book. You will see that many pieces are subdivided by multiple sections called movements. (There are usually three or four movements.) Follow along and at the end, and applaud as loudly as you like.
What should I do if I need to cough?
We provide Ricola cough drops to stifle coughs. Take as many as you like and do your best to wait until the pause at the end of the movement to cough.
Cellular phones
Cellular phones, pagers, watches, etc. should be turned off for the performance. It can be distracting to both the performers and the audience to hear a cell phone ring in the middle of a symphony. Texting is also distracting. No recording devices are allowed in the hall.
Food and Beverages
The Strand Theater provides food and beverages which are available in the lobby for sale before the downbeat, after the concert, and during intermission. No food or beverages may be taken into the concert hall during the performance.
How long will the performance last?
Most concerts last about two hours.
